The Australian painter and etcher Fred Williams (1927-82) is a key figure in Australian art of the second half of the twentieth century. Etching, which he first took up in London in 1954, was always of central importance in his work, and no other Australian artist of comparable stature has produced such a large and significant body of prints. From the beginning Williams' practice as an etcher closely paralleled his development as a painter, and a striking feature of his work is the cross-fertilization of ideas and motifs between his painting and his printmaking.
In her essay Irena Zdanowicz discusses Williams' initial training in Melbourne and the five years he spent in London, where he produced work inspired by the music hall in its final days. She goes on to describe the development of Williams' art on his return to Australia, and his constant working over and engagement with the landscape.
Fred Williams: An Australian Vision coincides with a major exhibition of his etchings, together with several of his drawings, gouaches and watercolours, at the British Museum. This book presents a lively survey of Williams' remarkable achievement as a painter-etcher and the development of his powerful and original vision of the Australian landscape.
