With this three-volume set the American Psychological Association launches a new series titled "APA Handbooks in Psychology," which will comprise references on core subfields; about 20 are already in the works, and they will be issued over the next several years. The series is envisioned as a sophisticated resource for a wide audience including researchers, clinicians, graduate students in psychology, and practitioners both in psychology and in the many fields where psychology matters. The three volumes addressing industrial and organizational psychology contain a total of 63 fully-developed contributed chapters (with references), arranged thematically. The first volume addresses building and developing the organization, with chapters on foundational issues followed by discussion of the design of organizations, human resource systems, and the work experience (e.g. flexible work schedules, team development, work team diversity, workplace safety). The second volume focuses on selecting and developing members for the organization. Discussion includes strategies and issues, evaluation of individuals, evaluation of systems, and development of members (e.g. training, mentoring, proactive work behavior). Volume 3 contains chapters on maintaining, expanding, and contracting the organization--addressing issues that include motivation, job attitudes, fostering a positive work environment, managing problems and politics, planning for change, the globally distributed workforce, cross-cultural issues, and organizational responsibility. Editor-in-chief Zedeck is professor of psychology at the U. of California, Berkeley, and, also, he's an administrator there for academic affairs and faculty welfare. He and six associate editors have shaped the work of approximately 120 contributors affiliated with business schools and psychology departments at universities throughout the US.
