For teacher educators and policy makers, Zeichner (teacher education, U. of Wisconsin-Madison) compiles 10 essays he wrote between 1991 and 2008 that consider the relationship between teacher education, teacher development, action research, and equity and social justice in schooling in the US. He focuses on these overarching themes: that programs should prepare teachers to successfully educate all children; that concepts and practices such as social justice, reflection, action research, and professional development schools should be carefully examined; and that democratic deliberation should exist in schooling, teacher education, and research. The essays also critique contemporary reforms, including those of social justice teacher education; discuss partnerships between schools and universities and restructuring efforts; and present recommendations for improvements. Two chapters are revised versions of keynote speeches. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
