This volume analyzes the effects of creative writing on the identities of 15 advanced adult second language writers and the relationship between their sociocultural perceptions of their previous life histories and their present psychological activities while writing in the target language. It uses interviews and think-aloud short story writing sessions to illustrate how the voices of these English learners at a UK university were mediated by their autobiographical identities formulated in previous language learning and literacy experiences. It describes research on the relationship between first and second language writing, the sociocultural movements in second language writing and identity studies, the construction of identities, and current concepts in the literature on examining writers' voices; the relationship of the writers' autobiographical identities to their emergent identities; how changing from autobiographical writing to story-continuation writing influenced their writing processes; and an examination of five of the writers and their identities.
