Independently researched and funded, this guide provides biased advice on choosing the right college by examining 134 of the top colleges in the US using the editors' criteria. Arranged by region, the colleges are described in terms of academic and student life and their political atmosphere, but with a conservative slant, as the editors consider many classes on popular culture as lacking "academic content" and argue that "many college classes today consist of little more than indoctrination in leftist propaganda," citing the percentages of faculties who voted Democrat in the 2000 election. Comments by students, professors, and graduates, and suggestions on building a core curriculum, are incorporated; core courses listed cover important areas to the editors: classical literature, ancient philosophy, the Bible, Christian thought before 1500, modern political theory, Shakespeare, US history before 1865, and nineteenth-century European intellectual history. Included in an appendix is a list of important questions to ask. Introductory essays also criticize the "dismantling of American education" by "leftist reformers" and deride any liberal atmosphere. Colleges were chosen based on whether they survived this dismantling and retained their "mission of humanistic education." These include the top 40 most selective national universities and the top 35 most selective liberal arts colleges from US News & World Report. This edition contains essays on 13 new colleges and two that are Canadian. Annotation ©2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
