Zuber published the second half of his doctoral dissertation (U. of Würzburg, Germany) as Inventing the Schlieffen Plan (2002 Oxford University Press), which argues that there never was such a plan. Here he presents the first half of his treatise, challenging the orthodox of opinion that Helmuth von Moltke, Prussian/German chief of general staff 1858-88 was a military genius. The man's academic champions, he says, attribute all his failures to his subordinates, and all their victories to him. He includes detailed battle maps, and draws on his personal experience in the US and German militaries to interpret events. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
